Import guide

How to import your Day One journal into Innerholm

To move from Day One to Innerholm: export your journal as a Day One JSON ZIP (File → Export → Export as Day One JSON ZIP), then go to Innerholm Settings → Import → Import from Day One and upload the file. Your entries, tags, starred status, dates, and weather data transfer automatically. The whole process takes under ten minutes.

Step-by-step guide

Export from Day One

Open Day One on a Mac. Go to File → Export → Export as Day One JSON ZIP. Choose a location and save the file. The ZIP contains a Journal.json and a photos folder. On iPhone, Android, Windows, or the web, the menu is somewhere else; how to export a Day One journal on every device has each path.

Frequently asked questions

Do my photos import from Day One?
Yes. Your photos come across with your writing, and each one lands back where it sat: Day One marks the spot in the entry text, and Innerholm reads that mark. JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP files are brought in; anything else stays in the ZIP, so keep the file. Photos over 10 MB are left behind too, which almost never happens with a Day One export.
What happens to my Rich Text formatting from Day One?
Innerholm imports the Markdown plain-text field from Day One's JSON export (the text field), which preserves headings, bold, italic, and lists. Day One's proprietary richText field is not used. In practice, the Markdown field contains the full entry text for almost all users.
Can I undo the import if something looks wrong?
Not automatically, but you can delete entries individually or in bulk from Innerholm's timeline. If you imported a test batch and want to start fresh, contact support and we can clear imported entries for you.
