Terms of Service
Plain language. No surprises. Last updated August 2026.
Your content is yours.
Everything you write in Innerholm belongs to you. We claim no ownership over your journal entries. To operate the service (storage, sync, backup, display), you grant us a limited, non-exclusive licence to host, store, back up, transmit, and display your content solely for that purpose. We do not use your content for advertising, to train AI or machine-learning models, or for behavioural profiling. AI features are off by default and read a journal only when you turn them on for that journal and ask. You can export and delete everything at any time.
Your words, not ours.
Journal entries and any other content you write in Innerholm are yours alone. They reflect your personal thoughts and experiences, not the views, opinions, or positions of Innerholm or its operators. We do not review, endorse, or take responsibility for user-generated content. You are solely responsible for what you write.
Your responsibility.
You are entirely responsible for all content you create, upload, or store through Innerholm. If a third party brings a claim against Innerholm arising from your content, your use of the service, or your violation of these terms, you agree to cover our reasonable legal costs and any resulting liability. We reserve the right to assume our own defense at our own cost, in which case you agree to cooperate.
Acceptable use.
Innerholm is for personal journaling by adults 18 and older (journal content is personal and sensitive by nature). Don't use it to store illegal content, harass others, or circumvent the account system. We reserve the right to terminate accounts that violate these terms, including accounts belonging to users under 18.
Not a medical or crisis service.
Innerholm is a digital notebook for writing and self-reflection. It is not a medical device, not a mental-health or therapy service, and not a substitute for professional care, and nothing in the app is medical advice. AI features generate reflective text from your own writing; nothing they produce is advice, diagnosis, or treatment either. Innerholm is not monitored by clinicians or counsellors, and it is not designed to detect or respond to a mental-health crisis, self-harm, or an emergency. If you are in distress or think you may be in danger, please reach out for help right away: in Canada, call or text 9-8-8 (the Suicide Crisis Helpline), or call your local emergency number. We care about your wellbeing, but we cannot and do not provide crisis or emergency support.
Subscriptions and billing.
Innerholm is free to use. Innerholm+ is an optional paid subscription handled by Stripe, our payment processor (we never see or store your full card details). Prices are in US dollars and exclude applicable taxes, which are shown at checkout. Paid plans renew automatically at the end of each billing period (monthly or yearly) at the then-current price, until you cancel. You can cancel anytime from Settings, which hands you to Stripe's secure billing portal: cancelling stops the next renewal, and you keep Innerholm+ until the end of the period you have already paid for. If you are on a yearly plan, we email you about 30 days before it renews, naming the date and the amount, so a charge is never the first you hear of it. If subscription pricing changes, we email you at least 30 days before the new price applies, and you can cancel before then. Except where the law requires otherwise, payments are non-refundable, but if something goes wrong, email us and we will make it right.
Gifts.
You can buy a year of Innerholm+ for someone else. A gift code does not expire: there is no use-by date and nothing is forfeited if it goes unused. The twelve months start on the day the code is redeemed, not the day it is bought, and a later change to the price of Innerholm+ does not change what an unredeemed code is worth. A gift does not renew and enrols nobody in a subscription: we take no payment details from the recipient, and about two weeks before the gifted year ends we email them to say it is ending and that nothing will be charged. Afterwards the account continues on the free plan with all of its writing intact. An unredeemed gift is refundable on request within a reasonable time; once it has been redeemed the ordinary refund rule above applies. If someone buys a gift for you, we receive your email address from them and use it only to deliver that gift.
Account deletion.
You can delete your account at any time from Settings. Deletion is immediate and permanent. All entries, tags, and personal data are removed from our systems, and there is no recovery. A few records outlive deletion where the law or your own protection requires it: anonymized feedback, our do-not-email list, our record of which letters we sent (kept against a one-way hash of your address, not the address itself), and billing records our payment processor must keep. The details are in the Privacy Policy.
Service availability.
Innerholm is provided as-is and as-available, with no warranties (express or implied) including merchantability, fitness for purpose, or uninterrupted service. We may modify or discontinue the service with reasonable notice. We have no obligation to store your content and are not responsible for any deletion, loss, transmission failure, or security breach.
Limitation of liability.
We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages (including loss of data, profits, or goodwill) however caused. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid in the 12 months before the claim arose, or $50 if you paid nothing.
Governing law.
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. Any dispute that cannot be resolved between us will be handled by the courts of British Columbia, and you agree to that venue. If the consumer-protection law where you live gives you rights, or a home venue, that a contract cannot take away, nothing in this section takes them away.
Your privacy.
Your use of Innerholm is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which explains what we store, what we never do with it, and the choices you control. If these terms and the Privacy Policy ever appear to conflict about personal information, the Privacy Policy wins.
Encryption keys stay with you.
If you turn on end-to-end encryption for a journal, the key is derived from your passphrase on your device and never reaches us. If you lose both your passphrase and your recovery codes, the entries in that journal cannot be recovered by anyone, including us. That is the design, not a failure of it, and by enabling the feature you accept that we are not responsible for entries that become unreadable because both were lost.
Changes to these terms.
If we make a material change to these terms, we will email you at least 30 days before it takes effect and update the date at the top of this page. Minor clarifications that do not change your rights take effect when posted. Using Innerholm after a change takes effect means you accept it; if you do not, you can export your data and delete your account before the change date.
The legal housekeeping.
These terms and the Privacy Policy are the entire agreement between you and Innerholm. If part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still stands. If we do not enforce a term today, we may still enforce it later. You may not assign your account or these terms to anyone else; we may assign them as part of a sale or reorganization of the service, with the same promises intact. Some places do not allow certain warranty exclusions or liability limits; if you live in one of them, those sections apply only to the greatest extent the law allows.
