Switching from Day One to Innerholm

Day One raised its price to $49.99/yr in recent years. If you are reconsidering the subscription, Innerholm is a natural landing spot, it is built for journalers, not note-takers or productivity users.

Day One import is on Innerholm's P1 roadmap. The planned importer will accept a Day One ZIP export and map:

  • Entry text (Markdown) → Innerholm rich text
  • Tags → Innerholm tags (created if new)
  • Starred entries → Innerholm favorites
  • Photos → Innerholm photo attachments
  • Weather metadata → Innerholm weather fields
  • Creation date → entry timestamp

During early access, contact support if you need help migrating your entries before the importer ships.

Privacy: how they compare

Privacy is the sharpest difference between the two apps.

Day One offers optional end-to-end encryption on some plans. However, Day One's privacy policy does not explicitly rule out scanning unencrypted entries for service improvement. If you use E2E encryption in Day One, the server cannot read your content, but that feature must be actively enabled.

Innerholm is not end-to-end encrypted (server-side storage is required for sync and search). However, Innerholm commits explicitly to: no content scanning for any purpose, no AI training on your journal text, no behavioral profiling, and no advertising. Every data-touching feature (weather, mood, analytics) is off by default and requires your consent to enable.

Neither app should be used for legally sensitive content without consulting a lawyer. For most journalers, Innerholm's explicit no-scanning commitment is the more meaningful privacy guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Is Innerholm a good Day One alternative?

Innerholm is a strong Day One alternative if privacy and price are priorities. Day One costs $49.99/yr and does not explicitly commit to no content scanning. Innerholm is free during early access, commits to no content scanning and no AI training on your data, and is web-first so it works on any device without a native app. Day One is better if you need native iOS/macOS apps, rich media (audio, video), multiple journals, or a mature feature set.

How much does Day One cost in 2026?

Day One costs $49.99 per year as of 2026. Innerholm is free during early access. A paid Innerholm+ tier is planned but pricing has not been announced. Switching from Day One to Innerholm during early access costs nothing.

Can I import my Day One journal into Innerholm?

Day One import is on the Innerholm P1 roadmap. The importer will accept a Day One ZIP export and map text, tags, starred entries, photos, and weather. It is not yet available during early access, contact support for help migrating before the importer ships.

Does Day One offer end-to-end encryption?

Day One offers optional end-to-end encryption on some plans. It must be actively enabled and uses local keys. Innerholm does not currently offer E2E encryption, entries are server-readable for sync and search. Innerholm compensates with an explicit no-scanning commitment rather than encryption.

Does Innerholm work offline?

Innerholm is web-based and currently requires an internet connection for sync. Entries created offline would need to be synced when you reconnect. Day One's native apps write locally first and sync when connected, giving better offline writing support. Offline-first support is on Innerholm's longer-term roadmap.
