Innerholm has twenty-three editions on its shelf. Build your own is the twenty-fourth: a journal you author yourself, from the same curated parts the others are made of. Your words, your paper, your ink, your type, your binding, and the small companions you want on the page. Everything renders live as you choose it, so you are never picking from a list.
Build your own is a custom journal builder inside Innerholm. You name the journal, say what it is for, write the prompts you want to see on an empty page, then choose its paper, ink, type, binding, and up to three companions on the page. Choices, not controls: the words are free, the visuals are curated, and every combination is designed to look made-well. It is part of Innerholm+, at $40 a year. Nothing about the free journal changes.
What you choose
Seven things, in this order. The first is yours to write freely. The rest are choices from a bench of designed parts, and you see each one on your own page before you keep it.
- The wordsA name (the only thing you must give it). What this journal is for. A dedication, if there is one: For Dad, For the 5am hours. One to five prompts that wait on the empty page. A line of things to notice. An epigraph for the top of every page. A footer line for the bottom.
- PaperSix textures: plain, ruled, grid, soft grain, vignette wash, margin rule. Then a tint. You tilt the paper toward a colour and choose how strongly the dye takes. Cream, Parchment, Sage, Dusk, Slate, Plum wash, Fog, and Linen sit on the shelf as starting points.
- InkA body ink for the words and an accent for the small furniture (the caret, the rules, the footer). Iron gall, Sepia, Midnight, Forest, Oxblood, and a few more, or a tint of your own in the same way as the paper.
- TypeFour pairings, shown as specimens set in your journal's own name: a plain humanist sans, a warm literary serif, a typewriter mono, and a quiet reading serif.
- BindingA clean edge, a spine, a top band, a stitch, or a frame, drawn on the live page's edge as you choose. And where the footer line sits.
- Companions on the pageSmall, quiet things that sit in the header: a mood mark, the day's weather, the moon phase, the place you wrote from, a day counter from a date you set, a week counter, your dedication line. All off until you choose them. A page carries three at most.
- The companion's mannerOnly if you invite it. The default answer is Not now, and a journal built that way has no AI anywhere in it. If you do invite it, you choose how it speaks (Listens, Asks, or Plain) and write one line it should hold in mind. It reads only this journal.
How it works
- Open Build your own from the end of the edition shelf, or begin from any of the twenty-three editions and change what you like. Beginning from an edition fills in every choice, so there is no blank slate to stare at.
- Name it, then choose. Words first, then paper, ink, type, binding, and companions. Every choice lands on a full live page with your name and your prompts already on it, the way you would hold stationery up to the light. Everything after the name is skippable; skip it all and you have a plain, quiet page.
- Write. The journal opens on today. Later, rebind it from the journal switcher: paper, ink, type, and binding change for the whole journal at once, and nothing you wrote is touched.
What it is not
The builder is a bookbinder's bench, not a design tool. It stores the names of the parts you chose, never raw colour values or layout, and the same renderer that draws the twenty-three editions draws yours. That is the whole reason it can promise what it promises.
- Not a colour picker Hue is free; lightness and depth are held inside a range that always reads as paper and ink. Contrast holds by construction, for every hue, without a warning in sight.
- Not a font or image upload Four designed type pairings, six designed textures. No cover photos, no backgrounds, no wallpapers.
- Not a layout canvas Nothing to drag, nothing to position. The page stays a page.
- Not a marketplace The shelf is first-party and curated. Your recipe is yours; nothing you build is sold or shown to anyone else.
- Nothing ugly, by construction Every combination of the parts on the bench is designed to look made-well. If a choice could break the page, it is not on the bench.

Can I upload my own fonts, images, or pick any colour?
No, on purpose. The visual choices are curated: designed textures, designed type pairings, designed bindings. Colour is the one place you are free, and only in hue: you tilt the paper or the ink toward a colour and choose how strongly the dye takes, and the builder keeps the lightness and depth inside a range that always reads as paper and ink. That is what makes the promise possible: nothing you make in it can come out ugly or unreadable. Words are the free material, because words are yours.
Is the journal builder free?
The builder is part of Innerholm+, at $40 a year or $5 a month. The rest of the journal is free: unlimited entries and journals, eight free editions, sync, search, encryption, and export are never behind Plus. If Plus ever lapses, a journal you built keeps its binding and its entries; only the ability to rebind it is paused.
Can I change a built journal later?
Yes. Rebind it from the journal switcher. Paper, ink, type, and binding change for the whole journal at once, because paper is the journal's identity, not per-entry decoration. Words and companions apply going forward, and a day or week counter keeps its original start date.
Can I begin from an existing edition?
Yes. Any of the twenty-three editions can be the starting point: it fills in every choice, and you change what you like from there. The result is your own journal, with your own name on it. The safety behaviours built into a few first-party editions do not copy across, and AI always starts at Not now.
