Postpartum journal prompts
The fourth trimester is mostly undocumented because nobody has a spare hand. A postpartum prompt should be answerable in four lines, one-handed, at an hour that makes no sense.
How to use these
Two sentences counts. Write it at whatever hour you are awake, and do not go back and fill in the days you missed.
Today, one-handed
Short on purpose. Every one of these can be answered in a sentence while something else is happening.
- How is your body today, plainly?
- How is your heart today, separately from your body?
- What did today look like, in the order it actually happened?
- What did they do today that you want to remember?
- What did you eat today, and did anyone bring it to you?
- How much did you sleep, and when, roughly?
- What was the best two minutes of today?
- What made you cry today, if anything, and was there a reason?
What nobody said
The gap between what you were told and what this is actually like. Naming it is most of the relief.
- What are you finding hard that you were not warned about?
- What is easier than you feared?
- What has surprised you about yourself?
- What do you miss?
- What does your body feel like that you were not told about?
- What advice have you been given that does not fit you?
- What are you comparing yourself to, and where did that picture come from?
- What would you like someone to say to you right now?
The people, and you
Worth writing down because a specific ask is easier for someone to say yes to than a general one.
- Who has helped, and what exactly did they do?
- What do you need that you have not asked for?
- What would you tell another person in week three?
- What is one thing that is yours, still?
- What could someone do this week that would actually help?
- How are you and the other people in the house doing?
- Who can you be completely honest with, and have you been?
- What did you love doing before, and what is the smallest version of it?
