Faith journal prompts
A faith journal keeps the conversation going in your own words, on the days when the words are thin as much as the days they are not. These prompts follow the old shape of a morning reading and an evening examen.
How to use these
Read, then write. If the honest answer this week is doubt or silence, that is a real entry and belongs on the page too.
The reading, and the morning
Written next to whatever you read. The first question is what it says, not yet what it means.
- What line from today stayed with you, and why that one?
- Where were you still today, and where were you not?
- What is this passage asking of you, plainly, before any interpretation?
- What did you read today that you would rather it did not say?
- What are you carrying into today that you would like help with?
- Where do you expect to need patience before this evening?
- What has this season of the year been asking of you?
- What would you like today to be about?
The evening examen
The old five steps, shortened. It ends in gratitude rather than accounting, which is the whole difference between an examen and a ledger.
- What are you grateful for that you did not ask for?
- Where did you fall short today, and what would repair look like?
- Who was put in front of you today?
- What consolation came today, however small?
- Where did you notice something you would call grace?
- What did you do today out of love, and what out of duty?
- Where were you most yourself today?
- What went unsaid today that should have been said kindly?
Asking, and the long conversation
For the entries that are not tied to a day. Doubt belongs here as much as anything else does.
- What are you asking for, said plainly?
- What have you been avoiding bringing to prayer?
- What do you believe today that you did not believe five years ago?
- Where is your faith thin at the moment, and can you say so honestly?
- What are you holding on to that you have been asked to set down?
- What would you like to be different in you by this time next year?
- Who are you praying for tonight, by name?
- What would you say if you stopped choosing the words carefully?
